Dear Renee;
I live in Indianapolis and know many people who know and love your family. The same week that your Derek died, our 22 yr old son Zach, who we had adopted as a beautiful brown baby and covenanted to raise for God's kingdom, died of an accidental toxic overdose of prescription and other drugs. We have been committed to adoption for many years, adopting Zach when our children were 16 and 18, and adding a beautiful little brown baby sister named Jordan 2 yrs later. When he died, Zach was in pre-med studies and hoped to become a doctor, but we knew his drug use would sabotage that if he didn't get free. We knew he could die---my brother died after 40 yrs of drug abuse---but never thought he would. He had been troubled for many years, but we believed God was going to deliver him. And in spite of his deep rebellion at the time of his death, God has confirmed to us in many ways, including dreams and visions from others, that Zach is with Him.

We heard about Derek's death within days of Zach's. In fact, Jordan went to One Thing within a week with her cousins, who had served an internship at IHOP awhile ago. We were so shaken and fragile, it seemed the world had turned upside down, and though I knew the truth and clung to it, it seemed God was really making some mistakes.

Our grief has been the most surprising thing in my Christan life. I truly understand now what the little legend called "Footprints" means. I once thought it was trite, but now that I have experienced God carrying me when I thought I was walking all alone, I understand. I spoke with my friend Pam Sardar today and she told me about your blog. My prayers are with you and your family as you walk through this vale of tears. I know from our experience that even the responsibilities of caring for your 10 children can't completely distract you from the grief you feel for your precious husband. There are days, but more hours and moments now, when I can hardly breather for missing Zach so much.

I pray you are sensing His presence today. I loved the piece on hope, by the way! Thanks for sharing it in the midst of your pain.

Sincerely, Linda Fisher
